For how long is the eTA to Canada valid?

The Canadian eTA is valid for 5 years or until the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first:

  1. Validity period: the eTA is valid for 5 years from the date of issue, provided that your passport remains valid during that time. This means you can use the eTA for multiple entries to Canada within this 5-year period.
  2. Linked to the passport: The eTA is linked to the passport with which it was requested. If you obtain a new passport during the validity period of the eTA and wish to continue using the authorization to travel to Canada, you will need to apply for a new eTA with your new passport. The eTA cannot be transferred from one passport to another.
  3. Multiple entries: During the validity period of the eTA, you can enter and exit Canada multiple times. Each entry is allowed for a maximum of 6 months.

It is important to keep track of the expiration date of your eTA and ensure to renew it on time if you plan to continue traveling to Canada after it expires. This ensures you can continue using the ETA as your valid authorization to enter the country without inconveniences.
