How far in advance of my trip should I request the eTA to Canada?

You can apply for the Canada ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for at least 5 days in advance. However, it is recommended to apply at least 15 days before your travel date to ensure all procedures are completed and to avoid last-minute issues related to flights or accommodation.

Reasons to Apply in Advance Approval Process

  1. Approval process. Although the ETA application process is usually fast, in some cases may require additional time for document review or further information.
  2. Corrections and modifications. Applying in advance allows you to correct any errors in the initial application or provide additional documents if necessary, without the pressure of an imminent deadline.
  3. Travel planning: Having the ETA approved in advance facilitates planning other aspects of the trip, such as purchasing airline tickets and booking accommodation.
  4. Peak seasons: During high travel seasons or holidays, the volume of applications may increase, potentially leading to longer processing times. Applying earlier reduces the risk of delays.
